Sierra Grille Trim Flies Off Despite GM Recall Fix

  • A 2022 GMC Sierra owner says his grille piece detached after recall repair.
  • GM’s official recall fix used extra fasteners and adhesive on affected trucks.
  • Over 70,000 examples were recalled earlier for grille attachment failures.

Full-size pickup trucks are supposed to be tough and rugged and ready for the harshest situations. That reputation took a dent recently when GM issued a recall on certain GMC Sierras a few months ago because they struggled to manage high winds. More specifically, their upper grille treatment would fly off on the highway. Now, one owner says that his grille flew off after he had GMC fix it under the same recall and he’s got pictures to prove it.

var adpushup = window.adpushup = window.adpushup || {que:[]};
adpushup.que.push(function() {
if (adpushup.config.platform !== “DESKTOP”){
adpushup.triggerAd(“0f7e3106-c4d6-4db4-8135-c508879a76f8”);
} else {

}
});

Grille Trouble at Speed

The initial recall affected over 70,000 trucks. Each was subject to the potential for cracking attachment points. If and when those points failed, the upper chrome grille treatment could yeet itself into traffic. Back in February, GM had already identified over 1,200 examples of the issue happening to customers in the field. Now, it’s got one more, and it’s happened to a truck that allegedly had the recall completed.

 Sierra Grille Trim Flies Off Despite GM Recall Fix

The original poster on Reddit uploaded two photos of the part and his truck on the side of the highway. “I just assumed, they’re GMC. They have a recall. They’ve got tons of engineers. They probably figured out a safe and effective way to secure the grille to make sure it never came off,” he wrote. “Wrong.” The recall fix included new fasteners and additional adhesive. The photos below show the adhesive on the underside of the grille treatment. Clearly, it didn’t hold up.

One-Off Fluke Or Larger Problem?

Based on extensive searching on various forums, Facebook groups, and more, this appears to be the only case of a grille failing after the recall remedy. We’ll keep our eyes peeled for other examples. For the time being, it could simply be a case of a remedy not performed to GM specifications. That’s what we’ll have to guess until we see if others end up with the same issue. It certainly wouldn’t be the first time that a single recall was insufficient to fix an issue.
