Mini Coopers were never the fastest cars, the sleekest looking, or the most economical. What they did offer was something harder to define but more rewarding: sharp handling, a playful chassis, and a genuine sense of connection behind the wheel. For years, that experience came with the option of a manual gearbox. But that final link to enthusiast driving is now officially gone.

     var adpushup = window.adpushup = window.adpushup || {que:[]}; Despite a short-lived spike in demand when it returned, Mini has confirmed its lineup will stick with automatics for the foreseeable future.

More: America Just Lost Its Last 5-Speed Manual Gearbox Car

We knew long before it happened that Mini was ditching three pedals. As early as mid-2023, the brand confirmed it would move away from manual gearboxes. Still, it stuck around a little while longer, even making an appearance in the convertible version of the Mini Cooper JCW. But that was the final hurrah. Since then, the manual has been completely absent, and a new report confirms it’s not coming back anytime soon.

According to Drive.com.au, Mini Australia and New Zealand head of product, James Orlov, confirmed it once again in a recent meeting. “For the end of the previous generation, [the manual] was part of the uncertainty with wiring harnesses out of the Ukraine, [that] situation meant that we had to prioritize the volume mover, which was the automatic,” he said.

Only 1 in 30 Buyers Chose a Manual

“In the new generation, it was not prioritized at all. And as we move towards EU7 [emissions rules] in Europe, that will probably see further development in that regard,” he continued. Evidently, just three people in a hundred would select the stick shift when given the option. That kind of low sales volume just doesn’t justify all the testing and certification an automaker must go through to sell such a car.

Could it be that somehow the brand is secretly working on one? Not if Alex Brockhoff, general manager of Mini Australia and New Zealand, is telling the truth. “There’s no plan for manual transmissions. Customer demand on manuals is very low. [And] the emission requirements, all the testing that goes into those, and creating development topics around that shifts away from manual transmissions,” he says.

Brockhoff even went as far as to point to the lack of manually-equipped competition out there. Why build one if the competition isn’t? No doubt, it’s dwindling worldwide, not just in Australia or the U.S.A. Sure, some hardcore six-figure supercars are still available with a clutch pedal, but affordable performance cars with manuals are quickly becoming a thing of the past.

     var adpushup = window.adpushup = window.adpushup || {que:[]};

Mini confirms manual transmissions are no longer offered due to low demand.
