A driver of a C3 Chevrolet Corvette in Colorado is lucky to be alive after a horrifying crash that left the car wedged under a steel guardrail. If the driver hasn’t already bought a lottery ticket, they definitely should, because had things unfolded just a bit differently, the outcome could have been tragic, not to mention gruesome.

According to the Castle Rock Fire and Rescue Department, the brown Corvette collided with a guardrail near the Douglas County Fairgrounds in Castle Rock over the weekend. While the exact cause of the crash hasn’t been disclosed and we’re left wondering if it was a case of driver error, the photos shared on Facebook paint a chilling picture of just how lucky the driver was to survive.

Thanks to the C3’s low-slung profile, the front of the car slid under the upper part of the guardrail, crushing the windshield in the process. Miraculously, though, the Corvette didn’t continue its slide. It came to a halt with the guardrail positioned squarely in the middle of the passenger compartment, mere inches away from where the driver’s head would have been.

Local authorities say they had to cut off the Corvette’s roof to free the driver. They also needed to lift up the guardrail to pull out the stricken Chevy.

The crash left all of the car’s glass shattered, with nothing left in the cabin except a white sheet and an orange basketball. If the Corvette hadn’t stopped when it did, the driver’s head could have been resting right next to that basketball. Amazingly, not only did the driver survive, but they walked away without a scratch. This is especially surprising considering the C3 lacks virtually all of the safety features found in modern cars, not even airbags to soften the blow.
