One McLaren Locked Up Mid-Corner Now Dozens Are Under Recall

  • McLaren is recalling a handful of vehicles that have incorrectly routed brake lines.
  • When safety features intervene, the wrong wheel could be braked causing a loss of control.
  • The issue impacts some 2020-2025 models including the Artura, 600LT, 720S, GT, and GTS.

Recalls are a fact of life and they impact automakers big and small. That’s clear today as McLaren is recalling 29 different vehicles over a braking issue. According to the government, the anti-lock braking system and electronic stability program may not function properly. This is due to brake lines that have been incorrectly connected at the control module.

In essence, the “rear right and rear left brake pipes are braking the opposite wheel.” While that doesn’t sound too bad, the government noted that when a driver is close to or at the limit of available traction – as one might be in a McLaren – the ABS and ESP systems could intervene. This is where the problem lies as the wrong wheel could be braked and become ‘locked up.’

McLaren was notified about the problem following an incident at a race track where the driver “lost control in a corner due to a wheel lock-up in an unusual way.” While this was presumably scary, the car wasn’t damaged and no one was injured.

This kicked off an investigation, which found the brake lines were routed incorrectly. The company then began exploring to determine whether this was a one-off issue or a more serious problem.

As part of the effort, McLaren looked into their records for an ESP test that could signify a problem. While the company was able to “definitively rule out the defect on the vast majority of McLaren vehicles,” the company identified 80 cars that failed this test including the one in the reported incident.

McLaren believes the remaining 79 vehicles that failed the test were fixed, but they can’t say for certain as they don’t have a “recorded positive retest result.” So, out of an abundance of caution, they’re recalling 29 vehicles that came to the United States.

They’re spread across a hodgepodge of vehicles from the 2020-2025 model years. This includes the Artura, 600LT, 720S, GT, and GTS.

As part of the recall, dealers will inspect the vehicles to see if the brake lines are correctly routed. If not, they’ll make the necessary changes.
